Origins
Khalil is Arabic for "true friend". There are several
reasons we chose to name the camp, Kamp Khalil. The first reason
we chose the name was because it has its roots in the Arabic language.
The second reason we chose the name was because it is catchy and
appeals to the need of all youth to find validation in strong, true
friendships. The third reason we chose the name was because it is
our family name, and we wanted to establish a legacy for our children
to the benefit of all children of future generations.

Kamp Founders
Hanif M. Khalil and Baiyina H. Khalil began Kamp Khalil in September
of 2003. Both graduated from Florida State University in December
of 2002, with a Bachelors degree in Sport Management and English
Education, respectively. After graduating, both wanted to begin
working toward their family goals. One of their family goals was
to establish youth-oriented programs.
Hanif and Baiyina reflected on the institutions and events that had the greatest influence on their development. Those that were the most effective were those that educated them on Islam, allowed them to develop their leadership skils, provided opportunties to learn the value of teamwork, and increased the time spent with other Muslim youth. It is Hanif and Baiyina's desire to serve and use their lives to provide the same opportunties to the next generation. And so, Kamp Khalil was founded.

Kamp History
The 1st annual Kamp Khalil was a 4-day event beginning on July 29,
2004. As cars and vans, filled with eager youth and adults, arrived
at the Deerhaven Campgrounds, we were all excited to discover what
Kamp Khalil had to offer. 27 youth and over a dozen adults from
Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Kansas City, and North Carolina introduced
themselves for the first time that day and departed as friends.
Many of the youth have kept in contact throughout the years. Events
like “Khalil Khaos” basketball competitions, canoeing
and a talent show have become the highlights of the weekend. Every
summer the participants bring a new energy to the weekend, making
each year more hype than the last. For the 2nd Annual Kamp Khalil
we had 34 registrants and added Indiana and Georgia to our list
of participating states. For the 3rd Annual Kamp Khalil we increased
our participation again to 46 youth, and also added Maryland to
our list of participating states.
Each year, we have a new theme and workshop sessions designed
to educate and empower the youth. The objective of Kamp Khalil is
to teach life skills. These are just some of the activities we have
had through out the years. For dollars and sense, the youth were
asked to look at some photos of “junk” and work as a
group to find creative ways to make money using the items. For understanding
sexuality, youth were asked to role play a scene in which they are
being pressured into having sex. For positive communication, youth
were asked to analyze popular songs and create more positive lyrics.
For health, youth were asked to answer some basic questions about
our digestive and excretory systems and educated about how to improve
their bodies’ functions. For leadership, youth completed the
“I Spy” game in which they learned the dynamics of suspicion,
trust, and distrust in a leaderless group.
At the conclusion of the weekend, the youth, team leaders, and
volunteers all complete evaluation forms which are reviewed and
used in improving the workshops and activities each year. Because
Kamp Khalil was created for the sole purpose of increasing the quality
of the life for those that attend, we are dedicated to improving
each year with the feedback from the youth. Their voice is the most
powerful guiding force for Kamp Khalil. May Allah continue to reward
us all in our efforts to please him.
